Murchison Falls National Park, located in northwestern Uganda, is the largest national park in the country, covering an area of 3,893 square kilometres. Established in 1952, the park is named after the dramatic Murchison Falls, where the Nile River squeezes through a narrow gorge and plunges 43 meters down, creating a powerful waterfall.
The park is renowned for its diverse ecosystems, including savannah grasslands, woodland, riverine forests, and wetlands, which support a rich array of wildlife. Visitors to Murchison Falls National Park can expect to encounter iconic African species such as elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, and hippos, along with an impressive variety of birdlife.
In addition to its natural wonders, the park also offers opportunities for boat safaris along the Nile River, chimpanzee tracking in the nearby Budongo Forest Reserve, and exhilarating hikes to the top of Murchison Falls for panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes.
The iconic Murchison Falls, where the mighty Nile River squeezes through a 7-meter-wide gorge before cascading down a 43-meter drop, is undoubtedly the park's most spectacular feature. Other highlights include the Nile Delta, Budongo Forest, and Lake Albert.
The dry season, from December to February and from June to September, is considered the Best Time to Visit Murchison Falls National Park. During this period, wildlife congregates around water sources, making it easier to spot animals during game drives and boat safaris. However, birdwatching is exceptional during the wet season, from March to May and from October to November.
